Mental Health Drop-In Center

"The door to a new day of self-awareness and mental health"

What Morning Haus Is:

A social center located in downtown Oil City for individuals who have a mental health diagnosis.

VTDC helps support a mental health Drop In Center.  Morning Haus currently serves approximately 97 mental health consumers.

The philosophy of the Drop In Center:

To provide an accepting, caring, non-clinical atmosphere

where the participants feel they belong.

To help consumers take responsibility for their own mental health through self-help.

To provide support in times of crisis and social isolation allowing consumers to improve social skills and develop and maintain healthy relationships.

This unique program is a consumer oriented activity center, run by and for its consumers.  Consumer leaders are selected by the group to manage the basic day-to-day operations and activities at the Center.  Staff members work together with the leaders and attendees to plan activities throughout each month.  Activities include shopping trips, pool and dart tournaments, arts and crafts, meal preparation, bowling, going to baseball games, attending Drop In Center dances or just conversation with others.

Morning Haus is also dedicated to assisting its’ participants in other areas of life.  Help with housing issues and consumer education is available when needed.  Literacy training and a bi-weekly job club, via S.T.E.P. (Supported Training and Employment Program), bring their services to the Center in Oil City.  Additional support from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors and the Social Security Office support consumers with their employment goals.

Also, the Drop In Center is continually working towards self-sufficiency, by creating their own businesses and fundraising activities.  Morning Haus has started its’ own button making and craft businesses.  Consumers can learn sales and marketing, operate the button machine and improve computer skills.  Other activities include Adopt a Highway, Kids Carnivals, supporting the American Cancer Society Walk-A-Thon, Oil Heritage Festival Book Sale and many other community support activities.  Mental Health Consumers looking to learn from others and enrich their lives should contact VTDC's Program Department at (814) 676-5755 extension 24 for further information.
